Pilates courses for the exercise physiologist and exercise scientist
These courses have been developed to up skill the exercise physiologist/scientists
in the Pilates method. Pilates is proving to be an exercise system with
enormous potential in areas as diverse as rehabilitation to peak performance
in elite athletes.
Each course is accredited with ESSA for 13 CEPs each, with more variety
of courses to follow in the future.
The Matwork Series
These are designed to enhance your exercise prescription repertoire with
a series of matwork exercises, Level 1 begins with entry level or rehabilitation
exercises. You will then progress to level 2 which will include intermediate
exercises for a general population to very advanced exercises for elite
athletes and performers.
The Equipment Series
This series of courses equips the exercise physiologist with the skills
necessary to work in an equipment studio/rehabilitation setting/physiotherapy
practice with Pilates.
These courses have been developed by a physiotherapist and will be tutored
by physiotherapists and exercise physiologists and exercise scientists.
Rehabilitation systems and an advanced understanding of applied anatomy
to the stabilising systems will be included in these courses.
Course Outline
Pre-requisite:
Minimum 3rd year human movement studies, exercise science and sport science
or HMS, exercise or sport science graduate
Core module
This is a pre-entry to all courses
• History of Pilates
• Principles of Pilates
• Applied anatomy of lumbar spine
• Contemporary research findings concerning stability systems of
spine
• Pre- Pilates Musculoskeletal Assessment of clients
Matwork Courses
Level 1 Matwork
• Applied anatomy of the scapular and upper limb stability
• Pilates repertoire for beginner to intermediate matwork, with
a strong emphasis on its application to rehabilitation
• Course work of level 1 and 2 star exercises
Level 2 Matwork
• Pilates repertoire for Intermediate to advanced matwork, including
high level strengthening and performance level exercises
• Course work of level 3 and 4 star exercises
Equipment – Reformer/ Trapeze table/ Wunda chair
Pre-entry to equipment
Core Module and Level 1 matwork
In the equipment courses you will be taught how to apply Pilates repertoire
to a variety of clientele from the apparently healthy, to rehabilitation
clients and to elite athletes. You will also gain an understanding of
more commonly encountered injuries and their pathology and traumatology,
including neck, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and back injuries. Discussion
of some diseases affecting musculoskeletal system will also be included.
Level 1 – Beginners
• Pilates repertoire for rehabilitation utilising Pilates equipment
• Theory – Injuries and diseases affecting musculoskeletal
system consequences and management with exercise therapy.
Level 2 – Intermediate
• Pilates repertoire for intermediate utilising equipment
• Theory – Injuries and diseases affecting musculoskeletal
system, consequences and management with exercise therapy.
Level 3- Advanced
• Pilates repertoire for advanced utilising equipment
• Theory – Injuries and diseases affecting musculoskeletal
system, consequences and management with exercise therapy.
